Tacoma Lawn Bowling Club was formed in 1929 by Scottish immigrant Alexander 'Sandy' Drummond and is in the Northwest Division area of Bowls USA.
It closed in 2014 due to lack of marketing and inability to attract new members but started again in 2017, preserving the club’s 88-year history and the new generation of leadership exemplifies the transition of the sport in the United States.
The new culture of bowls in the Pacific Northwest is exciting, loud, and intense. The competition continues to ramp up, and is now attracting prominent members of the community including mayoral candidates, parks commissioners, young professionals, aspiring entrepreneurs, and established business people with wide-ranging connections. The greens are becoming more than a competitive arena, and now represent a perfect opportunity to network among like-minded individuals looking to leave their mark on the Tacoma community.
The Club emphasizes community and inclusivity. The green is open to anyone who wants to play, even those passing through the park are more than welcomed to join a pickup game on Saturday afternoons. Looking for more? Begin with our Learn to Bowl program or join a League today.
Ways to get involved
Open Bowls $10 - Available Saturdays only, this is a great way to try out lawn bowling, or bring your friends and family out to show them the awesome sport you’ve been talking about! All equipment will be provided, however may be limited. Some light instruction will be available to help you get started. $10 'drop-in' fee per person.
Learn to Bowl Program $60 - Now in its second year, the Learn to Bowl Program is designed for those just starting out. It is a six week program that will teach the basics of the game including the equipment, technique, etiquette, types of shots, team interaction, communication, and tournament preparation. Program registration includes two nights of bowling per week with formal instruction occurring on one night and game play to utilize learned techniques the other night. Each program ends with a tournament on the Saturday following the last week.
Public League $60 - The only public league offered in 2020! This 8-week league is where you come to show your skills and compete with bowlers throughout Tacoma. Weekly rotations means you may be bowling with and against new people each week. Cumulative 8-week scoring will award the top three players a prize and some glory! The leagues are designed for experienced bowlers (have bowled at least a few times in the past; none of us are pros!) as no instruction will be provided during this program.
